21 September: Giulesti Maternity partially opens & another new lawyer for Florentina

(Photo: Libertatea) Oh well, so much for the reopening of the Giulesti Maternity. It was a partial opening, said Marius Savu. Why? Because 'they' forgot to get approval from the gas board (Distrigaz)... after all Oprescu's reassurances... Brilliant! I dare not even mention the word 'incompetent' again and I shan't write a sentence containing the words 'egg' and 'face' either.... So until tomorrow, only admissions and laboratory tests can be carried out, but the operating theatres and ITU are still out of bounds. Let's hope nobody needs a caesarian overnight...

The appeal for Florentina's release fell on stoney ground once again and she will remain in jail until October 15th. She has an additional new lawyer on the case alongside Maitre Soldea, Maitre Florian Surghie, who is also defending the mayor of Craiova, Antonie Solomon, charged with allegedly taking a bribe - a case ongoing since March this year. Solomon was released last Wednesday but he's not off the hook just yet (hearing Oct.11).

Maitre Surghie has been defending Petre Pitcovici since last year. He is, therefore, used to dealing with high profile cases and I do so hope he will be able to shake some sense into the absurd prosecution and throw the book at them - after all, the case for the defense would be a watertight one anywhere else and that's not even including the charges of fraud aimed at Iacob and the police by Maitre Corneliu-Liviu Popescu last month.

Florentina Carstea has her portion of guilt, we know that and she knows that too, but if Marinescu is free (and seemingly untroubled since he is quoted in the press as if he is still the director of Giulesti Maternity), if Toma and Dima are walking around in fresh air, then so should she be. She is not responsible for the rotten system, the corruption and the indifference from the top down. She is not to blame for being the only nurse on duty that night to care for eleven babies, the botched air-con installation and the dying health service. I pray that Maitre Surghie is the godsend she so needs - and deserves. One is innocent until proven guilty in lands of the civilised and Mr Surghie is an advocate of this universal desiderata.
